We all know that one of the main perks of living in Arizona is being able to spend the winters outside without having to deal with frigid temperatures and harsh conditions. But the summers can bring a challenge with how to stay safe and still participate in your favorite outside activities. With temperatures rising over 100 degrees daily, you need to know how to stay safe. Here are 5 tips for exercising in the Arizona summer heat:

  1. Pick The Right Time Of Day To Be Outside: The hottest time of the day is between 10am-4pm so try to avoid exercising outside during these times. Normally the early morning is the best time to work out, especially if it is supposed to be extremely warm that day.
  2. Wear Sunscreen: It is extremely important to protect your skin. Even on cloudy days you can get a burn and suffer from sun damage. It is recommended to use at least SPF 30 every 3 hours if you are planning on being in the sun and reapplying more often if you are sweating or in the water.
  3. Wear Loose, Light-Colored Clothing: There are many brands out there that make clothing for the high heat. The lighter the color, the more it will help reflect the heat away from your body. Try and stay away from layers, and picking clothes that are made from material to help keep you cool.
  4. Stay Hydrated: It is recommended to drink 1-2 glasses of water before you workout. It is also important to always carry water with you if you are working out-especially outside. It is recommended to drink 8 8oz. glasses of water everyday to keep hydrated, but during an Arizona summer this intake could easily be doubled if you are living an active lifestyle.
  5. Listen To Your Body: Listening to your body is always the most important, and especially when exercising in the high heat. You need to be true to yourself and use the clues your body is giving you. If you know you are thirsty and lightheaded, then maybe you need more water and to find a way to exercise indoors. Your body is your best messenger, so utilize it.
